TURKEY —Turkish fertilizer and metals enterprise Eti Bakir has commissioned an industrial equipment package valued at €55 million to upgrade its production footprint in Mardin Province. Under the agreement, Metso will engineer and supply an integrated pyrometallurgical processing plant designed to convert environmental leach residue into commercial-grade hot metal and slag products.
The scope of the technology deployment incorporates an SL/RN Xtra rotary kiln direct reduction unit combined with a 30 MVA electric smelting furnace featuring a hot feeding system. This implementation marks the initial commercial installation of Metso's specialized direct reduced iron smelting furnace technology, establishing an operational benchmark for industrial waste valorization.
Headquartered in Espoo, Finland, Metso is a publicly listed technology supplier specializing in equipment and services for aggregates, mineral processing, and metals refining industries globally. Eti Bakir is a major Turkish industrial producer focused on mining, metallurgical refining, and fertilizer manufacturing.
This capital project highlights a broader structural shift within heavy industry toward resource efficiency and circular economy frameworks. By extracting economic value from hazardous side streams, process plants can mitigate environmental liabilities while creating secondary revenue lines from recovered mineral assets.
For the global mining and metallurgy sector, the deployment demonstrates the viability of high-capacity thermal processing systems in closed-loop manufacturing. Standardizing these technologies across primary processing facilities enables regional supply chains to reduce primary extraction dependencies and advance industrial sustainability mandates.
