FRANCE; ROMANIA —Romania’s military capabilities are set for a major overhaul following a new procurement agreement for 12 H225M multirole military aircraft through the European Commission’s Security Action for Europe initiative. Negotiated alongside the French Armament General Directorate, the deal accelerates critical defence investments aimed at eliminating regional capability shortfalls.
This strategic acquisition initiates the operational retirement of the country’s aging IAR-330 Puma fleet, transitioning both conventional and special operations units to modern multirole rotorcraft platforms. Airbus, a major European aerospace and defence group specializing in commercial aircraft, defense systems, and military helicopters, will facilitate this fleet transition while strengthening local industrial integration through long-standing aerospace manufacturing partnerships in the country.
The procurement underscores broader European efforts to streamline defence readiness across Member States by leveraging coordinated financing mechanisms. For the regional defence sector, the agreement provides sustained industrial output and guarantees continued domestic maintenance support, technical services, and manufacturing involvement for national airspace assets.
For defence contractors, investors, and security stakeholders, the order highlights a growing shift among NATO and Eastern European nations to replace legacy equipment with standardized European military systems. The integration of modern multirole platforms enhances interoperability across allied forces while reinforcing regional supply chains and long-term maintenance infrastructure.
