European Energy has finalized a EUR 234.1 million project financing agreement for the construction of a 225 MW agrivoltaic facility in Sicily, Italy, securing backing from major international financial institutions under a long-term government revenue scheme.

A debt facility totaling EUR 234.1 million has been successfully closed by European Energy to fund the development of a large-scale solar power installation in southern Italy. Provided to project company Sun Project s.r.l, the financing was arranged by a syndicate of major European lenders, including Crédit Agricole CIB, Intesa Sanpaolo's IMI CIB Division, NORD/LB, and Societe Generale. The capital will directly support the construction phase of the 225 MW development situated in Vizzini, Sicily, which is scheduled to begin commercial operations in 2028.

European Energy is a Denmark-headquartered global developer of renewable energy solutions, specializing in wind, solar, and power-to-X technologies across multiple international markets. The project owner, Sun Project s.r.l, functions as the special purpose vehicle dedicated to executing the Sicilian facility.

The transaction highlights growing momentum for hybrid renewable infrastructure that harmonizes energy production with agricultural land management. Secured through a 20-year Contract for Difference under the Italian government's FerX incentive program, the asset delivers long-term cash flow predictability for the involved institutional lenders and investors. Upon completion, the utility-scale installation will stand as one of Italy's largest agrivoltaic developments, generating roughly 405 GWh of clean electricity annually to supply more than 135,000 households.

By integrating active sheep grazing, reforestation programs, and tailored biodiversity measures directly into its operational footprint, the initiative sets a benchmark for dual-land usage in Europe's decarbonization efforts. This structural approach addresses persistent regulatory and community land-use hurdles across southern Europe, demonstrating how dual-use agrivoltaics can maintain agricultural productivity while delivering grid-scale capacity.

For global capital markets and clean energy developers, the successful financing confirms strong banking appetite for complex, dual-purpose infrastructure assets when backed by state-supported tariff mechanisms. As national governments refine land-use policies to meet stricter European Union carbon targets, integrated models like the Vizzini facility present a scalable framework to mitigate land-constraint bottlenecks, expand institutional debt allocation in regional solar markets, and accelerate transition efforts across Mediterranean power grids.
