CROATIA —The European Investment Bank (EIB) has finalized a EUR 25 million financing agreement with the municipal administration of Varaždin to support a broad urban renewal initiative. This transaction represents the initial direct lending engagement between the multilateral institution and the Croatian city, establishing a foundational framework for future municipal cooperation and technical advisory support.
The deployed capital serves as a financial catalyst for a larger capital expenditure program totaling approximately EUR 100 million. By combining international development funds with municipal resources and European Union grants, the city aims to execute multiple structural upgrades designed to modernize public assets and improve municipal service delivery through the end of the decade.
Targeted investments focus on core municipal infrastructure, including the modernization of educational facilities, the restoration of cultural landmarks, and the expansion of athletic and recreational venues. Planned interventions feature the construction of a public aquatic complex, the substantial overhaul of the Graberje sports facility, and targeted expansions at local primary schools to accommodate demographic demand. Additional allocations target the renovation of public buildings to enhance energy efficiency standards and lower operational overhead.
Regional development stakeholders and local enterprises stand to gain from the expanded construction activity and improved urban amenities. The investment program is anticipated to stimulate local economic activity, generate temporary employment during the construction phase, and enhance the overall competitiveness and residential appeal of northwestern Croatia.
