Fincantieri to build three LNG-Powered cruise ships for Princess Cruises in €5 billion-plus Deal

Fincantieri has signed an agreement with Princess Cruises to construct three 183,000-gross-ton LNG-fueled Voyager-class vessels, with deliveries scheduled for 2035, 2038, and 2039 at the Monfalcone shipyard.

Fincantieri has finalized an agreement with Princess Cruises for the construction of three new Voyager-class cruise ships, as announced during the Seatrade Cruise Global event in Miami.

The LNG-powered vessels, each with a gross tonnage of 183,000 tons and capacity for 4,700 guests, will be built at Fincantieri’s Monfalcone shipyard. Deliveries are scheduled for 2035, 2038, and 2039.

The contract value, subject to financing and standard conditions, is classified as “very important” by the shipbuilder—industry analysts estimate such vessels typically exceed €1.5 - 1.8 billion per unit, placing the total above €5 billion. This development matters because LNG remains the most commercially mature low-carbon marine fuel capable of immediate greenhouse gas reductions, though methane slip concerns persist.

For Princess Cruises, the order locks in long-term capacity as the industry transitions away from heavy fuel oil. The extended delivery timeline (2035-2039) reflects shipyard backlogs and allows for potential mid-build technology upgrades. Industries impacted include cruise tourism, shipbuilding, marine engineering, and LNG bunkering infrastructure. Regional stakeholders include the Friuli Venezia Giulia economy surrounding Monfalcone and European LNG supply chains.

For investors, this signals sustained demand for large-tonnage LNG cruise vessels despite financing scrutiny, favoring established European shipyards with advanced gas-fueled construction expertise.

Fincantieri is an Italian shipbuilding company headquartered in Trieste, one of the world’s largest cruise ship constructors.

Princess Cruises is a global cruise line brand owned by Carnival Corporation & PLC, based in Santa Clarita, California.
