Finnair has partnered with SES to introduce multi-orbit satellite internet connectivity across 18 Embraer E195-E2 aircraft. The system will combine geostationary and low-Earth-orbit satellite capacity through electronically steered antennas, with the first equipped aircraft expected to enter commercial service in 2027.

BRAZIL; FINLAND —Finnair has entered into an agreement with satellite communications provider SES to install multi-orbit in-flight connectivity systems across 18 Embraer E195-E2 aircraft. The deployment will integrate satellite-based broadband equipment into the aircraft during their manufacturing process at Embraer, incorporating electronically steered array (ESA) antennas designed to connect with SES's satellite network.

The connectivity architecture will combine geostationary Earth orbit (GEO) satellite services operated by SES with low Earth orbit (LEO) capacity supplied through its partnership with Eutelsat. This arrangement is intended to provide aircraft with access to multiple satellite layers, supporting internet connectivity during flights and offering an alternative to relying on a single orbital network. The first aircraft fitted with the system is scheduled to enter service in 2027.

The agreement addresses the growing operational importance of broadband connectivity in commercial aviation. Passengers increasingly expect access to online communications, video streaming, cloud-based applications and digital services while travelling. For airlines, onboard internet has become part of the wider passenger experience and can support digital engagement throughout the journey.

For Finnair, the installation programme will extend connected services across a defined portion of its regional aircraft fleet. The use of factory-installed equipment is also relevant to aircraft production and delivery planning, as connectivity hardware can be incorporated before aircraft enter airline operations rather than requiring a separate retrofit programme.

The deployment creates business opportunities across the aviation technology supply chain, including satellite operators, antenna manufacturers, aircraft manufacturers and connectivity service providers. Combining GEO coverage with LEO capacity may also strengthen service flexibility, particularly as airlines seek connectivity solutions capable of supporting higher data demands and latency-sensitive applications.

The agreement further expands cooperation between SES and Eutelsat in the aviation connectivity market. SES is a Luxembourg-based satellite communications operator providing services through GEO and other satellite infrastructure. Eutelsat is a satellite communications group operating GEO and LEO networks, including the OneWeb constellation. Embraer, the Brazilian aerospace manufacturer, produces the E195-E2 aircraft selected for the installation.

For the companies involved, the programme represents a commercial deployment of multi-orbit connectivity within a scheduled aircraft manufacturing pipeline. Its implementation from 2027 will provide a basis for assessing passenger adoption, service performance and the commercial value of integrated satellite broadband in regional aviation.

Finnair is Finland's flag carrier and operates passenger and cargo services through its international and regional network. The agreement supports its plans to expand onboard digital services while connecting its aircraft operations with satellite-based communications infrastructure.
