UNITED KINGDOM —FluoRok has closed a 30 million USD Series A financing round led by Orano Venture Fund, Supernova Invest, and Bidra Innovation Ventures. The oversubscribed capital raise, which also includes participation from existing institutional backers and a 1.3 million USD grant from Innovate UK, will fund the transition from pilot operations to industrial-scale demonstrator facilities. These facilities will focus on producing reagents and lithium-ion battery electrolyte salts to validate repeatable manufacturing processes.
This development addresses a critical vulnerability in global chemical supply chains. Conventional fluorochemical production has relied for centuries on highly toxic hydrogen fluoride and high-purity mined fluorspar, which is predominantly sourced from a limited number of geographic regions. By utilizing mechanical activation instead of hazardous acids and extreme temperatures, the new platform operates on standard industrial equipment. This innovation significantly reduces capital expenditures, eliminates severe safety risks, and enables the use of lower-grade or recycled fluoride materials.
The breakthrough carries substantial implications for the pharmaceutical, agrochemical, and electric vehicle battery manufacturing sectors. Decoupling production from hazardous chemical handling aligns with increasingly stringent environmental, health, and safety regulations worldwide. Furthermore, it supports strategic policy objectives in the United Kingdom and Europe aimed at establishing sovereign, sustainable, and resilient supply chains for critical battery materials and essential chemical building blocks.
From a market perspective, this funding validates the commercial viability of alternative fluorochemical synthesis at an enterprise level. The platform-based nature of the technology allows for diversified revenue generation across multiple high-growth industries. Successfully establishing demonstrator facilities will provide the necessary operational proof points to secure long-term offtake agreements with major chemical and battery manufacturers, positioning the enterprise as a foundational supplier in the next generation of sustainable industrial processing.
FluoRok is a United Kingdom-based deep technology enterprise spun out from the University of Oxford, specializing in sustainable, hydrogen fluoride-free fluorochemical manufacturing. Orano Venture Fund and Supernova Invest are European venture capital entities focused on industrial performance, safety, and sustainable chemistry, while Bidra Innovation Ventures is a corporate investment arm backed by Morocco’s OCP Group targeting industrial and agricultural innovation.
