Fortescue has approved a US$680 million investment to develop the 200 MW Pilbara Green Energy Project, adding renewable generation beyond its Real Zero by 2030 requirements. The off-grid system with battery storage targets completion by 2028, with a pathway to multi-gigawatt expansion, serving data centre demand.

Fortescue has approved a US$680 million investment to expand its green energy capacity in the Pilbara, developing the 200 MW Pilbara Green Energy Project to deliver renewable generation beyond the company's Real Zero by 2030 strategy, according to an official announcement. The investment is in addition to the previously approved US$6.2 billion decarbonisation programme, with the project anticipated to be completed by 2028 and a pathway to multi-gigawatt expansion beyond 2030.

Fortescue is a global green energy and metals company with operations in Western Australia. The Pilbara Green Energy Project will deliver a fully integrated, off-grid renewable energy system with large-scale battery storage and firming capability. Fortescue's previously announced Green Grid, the backbone of its Real Zero Target, will by 2028 comprise 1.2 GW of solar, 600 MW of wind, 4-5 GWh of battery storage, and 620 km of transmission lines.

This development matters for Australia's industrial energy landscape, where data centre demand for green power is growing rapidly. The project demonstrates a proven pathway to energy independence with total control of costs and energy supply amid global energy market instability. Fortescue is engaging with interested parties, including government and traditional custodians, and will apply the same capital discipline and project execution capability from its decarbonisation efforts.

For the renewable energy industry, the project extends Fortescue's green grid model to third-party customers, particularly data centres. Stakeholders including industrial users, technology companies, and grid operators stand to benefit from expanded firmed renewable power capacity in the Pilbara region.
