JAPAN; SWEDEN —Swedish additive manufacturing firm Freemelt Holding AB has secured a major contract from Fusion for Energy, the European organization responsible for Europe's contribution to the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor and fusion energy development. Under the agreement, Freemelt will manufacture and supply 33,000 tungsten-based fusion components for the JT-60SA fusion program, the world's largest superconducting tokamak, located in Naka, Japan. The order features a base value of SEK 55 million, with additional options that could elevate the total contract value to SEK 84 million.
Deliveries under the agreement will take place over a two-year period extending through 2028, with the majority of component shipments scheduled for 2027. Freemelt will execute the contract through its Manufacturing business division alongside established supply chain partners, handling operations spanning from raw material sourcing to finished, qualified components. Tungsten serves as a vital plasma-facing material within fusion reactors due to its extremely high melting point, low sputtering characteristics, and excellent thermal conductivity, enabling parts to endure intense heat loads.
Fusion for Energy manages Europe’s participation in ITER and collaborates with industrial partners to advance commercial fusion technologies. Freemelt Holding AB, founded in 2017 and listed on Nasdaq First North Growth Market, specializes in Electron Beam Powder Bed Fusion technology to produce qualified advanced metal components for high-demand sectors, including MedTech, defense, and fusion energy.
This commercial milestone highlights a growing demand for qualified regionalized supply chains and advanced manufacturing capacity across high-tech sectors.
