GAIL plans to significantly expand its renewable energy footprint by developing 700 MW of solar capacity with integrated storage in Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra. The initiative supports captive industrial demand while accelerating the company’s transition toward cleaner energy and operational sustainability.

Gas Authority of India Ltd (GAIL) has announced plans to invest approximately INR 38 billion in solar power projects totaling 700 MW across Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra, according to official disclosures. The initiative includes a 600 MW installation with a 55 MWh battery energy storage system in Jhansi and a 100 MW project with 22 MWh storage in Chhatrapati Sambhaji Nagar.

The projects are designed to supply renewable energy for GAIL’s own industrial operations, specifically its petrochemical facility in Uttar Pradesh and its PDH-PP plant in Maharashtra. This approach aligns with a broader trend among energy-intensive industries to secure dedicated clean power sources to reduce emissions and manage long-term energy costs.

The development is significant as it reflects growing integration of renewable energy with storage systems in India’s industrial sector, enhancing reliability and reducing dependence on conventional grid power. It also supports national decarbonization objectives while strengthening energy security at the enterprise level.

For the power and infrastructure sectors, the move signals rising demand for hybrid renewable solutions, particularly in states with strong industrial bases. For investors and project developers, it highlights expanding opportunities in solar-plus-storage deployments driven by captive consumption models.

GAIL, India’s largest state-owned natural gas company, is progressively diversifying into renewables to complement its core gas transmission and marketing business. Upon completion, the projects are expected to increase GAIL’s installed renewable capacity to over 1,000 MW, marking a substantial shift in its energy portfolio.
