GCAP Agency awards GBP 4.6 billion contract to Edgewing for next-generation stealth fighter design

A trinational defense initiative has progressed to its next developmental stage as the GCAP Agency officially awarded a GBP 4.6 billion contract to prime contractor Edgewing. The 18-month agreement will fund the advanced concept assessment and joint detailed design of a next-generation combat aircraft. The GCAP Agency acts as the central management body for the Global Combat Air Programme on behalf of the UK, Italy, and Japan, while Edgewing serves as the joint industrial design authority tasked with driving the aircraft's delivery by 2035. This substantial award follows an initial GBP 686 million allocation granted earlier in April 2026.

Advancing into the detailed engineering phase represents a critical operational milestone in developing sovereign defense technologies for the participating nations. By pooling financial and engineering resources, the three governments are accelerating the creation of a stealth fighter platform equipped with advanced sensing, communications, and extended-range propulsion systems, effectively mitigating the prohibitive costs of independent development.
