EGYPT —GE Vernova has entered a services agreement with affiliates of the Egyptian Electricity Holding Company to extend the operating life of five 9F gas turbines at the Kureimat, Nubaria and Cairo North power plants. The turbines collectively represent approximately 1,250 MW of generating capacity, making the program relevant to the continued operation of a significant portion of Egypt’s existing gas-fired generation fleet.
The Rotor Life Extension program is designed to add an expected 13 to 15 years to the operating life of the five units. GE Vernova will carry out the related services between 2028 and 2035, providing a long-term maintenance and modernization schedule rather than a single equipment intervention.
A key part of the work involves evaluating the remaining service life of turbine rotor components. The assessment will support decisions on component condition and lifecycle requirements, with the broader objective of maintaining turbine operating performance and efficiency as the equipment remains in service.
The agreement covers turbines operated by Upper Egypt Electricity Production Company, Middle Delta Electricity Production Company and Cairo Electricity Production Company and has been endorsed by the Egyptian Electricity Holding Company. The arrangement therefore involves multiple generation companies within Egypt’s state-linked electricity structure.
Extending the service life of existing gas turbines can allow power producers to maintain dispatchable generation capacity without relying solely on premature replacement of major generating assets. For Egypt’s electricity sector, the program supports continued use of established power infrastructure while modernization and efficiency measures are applied to ageing equipment.
The work is also relevant to the wider power equipment and services market. Turbine manufacturers, maintenance providers, engineering companies and component suppliers can participate in lifecycle programs as utilities seek to preserve the availability of existing generation assets. Longer service periods can also create recurring aftermarket demand for inspection, engineering, parts and technical support.
For GE Vernova, the agreement expands its lifecycle services activity in Egypt and follows earlier modernization work involving Egyptian power plants. GE Vernova is an energy technology company supplying equipment and services across power generation, grid and electrification markets, while the Egyptian Electricity Holding Company oversees electricity generation and related activities through affiliated production companies.
