INDIA —GE Vernova T&D India Limited has received official intimation from Power Grid Corporation of India Limited confirming its position as the L1 bidder for the design, supply, and execution of a massive High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) terminal station project. Under the terms of the domestic contract, the company will establish a 6,000 MW (2x3,000 MW), ±800 kV Line Commutated Converter (LCC) HVDC Terminal Station over a multi-year execution period. The critical infrastructure project is designed to facilitate the large-scale evacuation of renewable power from Barmer II in Rajasthan to South Kalamb in Maharashtra.
This development underscores the accelerating pace of grid modernization and inter-state power transmission expansion across India. As the country aggressively expands its renewable generation assets, robust high-voltage transmission corridors are essential to prevent curtailment and connect generation-heavy zones in northwestern states to demand hubs in western and southern industrial belts. The selection of Line Commutated Converter technology reflects a commitment to long-distance, ultra-high-power transfer capability required for regional grid reliability.
From an industry standpoint, the award highlights the crucial role of specialized original equipment manufacturers in executing mega-scale grid infrastructure. Power Grid's selection of an established domestic technology supplier reinforces domestic manufacturing readiness and aligns with national objectives for energy transition infrastructure. Furthermore, the deployment of ±800 kV HVDC systems sets a benchmark for high-capacity power transmission architecture across emerging power markets.
For investors and corporate stakeholders, securing L1 status on this flagship project significantly enhances GE Vernova T&D India's multi-year order book visibility and reinforces its leadership position in high-value HVDC systems. Power Grid Corporation of India Limited is a state-owned electric utility undertaking involved in inter-state power transmission. GE Vernova T&D India Limited is a premier power transmission and distribution equipment provider specializing in advanced grid solutions. This strategic win places the equipment manufacturer at the center of India's long-term energy transition capex cycle.
