PERU —Gilat Perú has entered into a $28 million agreement with Pronatel, Peru’s national telecommunications programme, for a broadband network upgrade covering the Ica region. Construction is scheduled for completion by mid-2027, after which the network will enter a seven-year operational phase under the agreement. Gilat’s latest award extends its involvement in Peru’s regional connectivity programme.
The upgraded infrastructure is expected to provide internet speeds 20 times higher than those currently available to 116 public institutions across Ica. The project will also establish free Wi-Fi access in 30 public squares, extending the benefits of the network beyond government facilities to community locations. Ica becomes the fifth Peruvian region to receive a broadband network upgrade through Gilat since 2025.
Gilat Satellite Networks is a provider of satellite-based broadband communications and networking technology serving government, defence, enterprise and other connectivity markets. Its Peruvian subsidiary, Gilat Perú, has experience deploying and operating regional telecommunications infrastructure, including networks serving geographically dispersed public institutions.
For Peru’s public sector, the investment strengthens communications infrastructure supporting institutions that rely on digital connectivity for education, healthcare and public safety services. Higher network capacity can also improve the ability of public agencies in different locations to access and deliver online services, while public Wi-Fi points broaden access for communities outside institutional networks.
The award adds to a continuing government-backed expansion of regional broadband infrastructure in Peru. It follows earlier Gilat projects involving connectivity upgrades and public Wi-Fi, indicating sustained procurement demand for telecommunications infrastructure in underserved and geographically diverse areas.
For technology and telecommunications suppliers, the Ica contract highlights opportunities associated with multi-year public connectivity programmes that combine network construction with subsequent operations. The seven-year service period also gives Gilat Perú a longer-term role in managing the upgraded infrastructure, while the expansion of institutional and community connectivity could support wider adoption of digital public services in Ica.
