Google has secured a 396-megawatt power purchase agreement with Fervo Energy for geothermal power in Utah. The deal supports Google's 24/7 carbon-free energy goals and includes an option to expand capacity to nearly 1 gigawatt by 2030.

UNITED STATES OF AMERICA Google has entered into a 396-megawatt power purchase agreement with next-generation geothermal developer Fervo Energy to supply clean power from the Cape Station project in Utah. Under the terms of the agreement, electricity delivery is scheduled to begin in 2028 to support potential data center expansion in the region. The deal also grants Google an option to increase its procurement by approximately 600 megawatts, bringing potential total capacity to nearly 1 gigawatt by June 2030.

Fervo Energy is an energy technology provider specializing in enhanced geothermal systems, utilizing advanced drilling techniques to generate utility-scale continuous clean electricity. Google, a subsidiary of Alphabet Inc., operates major global digital infrastructure and cloud computing services requiring continuous electrical power.

This arrangement addresses the growing electricity demands of data centers and artificial intelligence workloads by securing firm power generation. Unlike traditional solar and wind assets, enhanced geothermal technology provides continuous, non-intermittent baseline capacity without increasing electricity expenses for residential utility rate payers. The framework operates under Utah legislation that accommodates direct utility contracting for major industrial consumers.

The agreement marks a significant commercial scale-up for enhanced geothermal technologies following earlier pilot initiatives in Nevada. As energy-intensive technology operations expand, commercial agreements of this scale establish a repeatable template for technology firms to contract dedicated low-carbon energy directly. This operational deployment also stimulates regional capital investment and economic activity in southwest Utah.

For energy developers and utility operators, large-scale long-term contracts provide the revenue stability required to finance initial deep-drilling infrastructure. The integration of continuous geothermal energy into regional networks offers a viable strategy for balancing grid loads as thermal power plants retire and digital power demand increases.
