Google has introduced major artificial intelligence upgrades to Google Maps, including a conversational planning feature powered by Gemini and new immersive navigation tools. The update aims to transform how users discover locations, plan trips and navigate routes, with initial rollout underway in the United States and India.

Google has introduced a suite of artificial intelligence-driven capabilities in Google Maps, marking one of the platform’s most significant product updates in over a decade. According to company disclosures, the upgrade integrates Google’s Gemini AI models to enable a conversational interface that allows users to ask complex questions about travel, destinations and route planning directly within the application. The feature, known as Ask Maps, enables users to interact with the platform through natural language prompts rather than traditional search queries.

The tool draws on extensive mapping data covering hundreds of millions of locations worldwide as well as user-contributed insights, enabling the system to recommend destinations, activities and stops along planned routes. The capability is being introduced on Android and iOS devices in the United States and India.

Google LLC, a subsidiary of Alphabet Inc., operates one of the world’s largest digital mapping platforms and provides navigation services used by individuals, businesses and logistics providers globally. Alongside conversational search, the company is deploying a redesigned navigation system that uses artificial intelligence to generate realistic three-dimensional previews of routes by combining aerial imagery with Street View data. The enhanced interface aims to improve route clarity by visualising intersections, road layouts and surrounding infrastructure before users reach them. For the travel, hospitality and local services sectors, the update could influence how consumers discover destinations and plan trips through digital maps. The expanded role of AI within mapping platforms may also affect businesses reliant on location-based discovery, including restaurants, tourism operators and retail outlets, as algorithm-driven recommendations increasingly shape customer traffic and trip planning behaviour.
