GERMANY —German pharmaceutical manufacturer Grünenthal has secured an agreement to acquire the cancer medication Stivarga from Bayer AG in a transaction valued at up to €375 million. The deal, which remains subject to customary regulatory approvals, is slated to complete by late 2026 or early 2027. Under the terms of the agreement, the Aachen-headquartered firm will take control of an oral multikinase inhibitor currently distributed across more than 90 global markets. The drug serves as a key treatment option for advanced gastrointestinal stromal tumors, metastatic colorectal cancer, and hepatocellular carcinoma in patients who have exhausted other therapy lines.
This acquisition highlights a distinct strategy within the pharmaceutical sector, where established legacy treatments are repurposed by specialized players to generate stable revenue streams. Grünenthal projects that incorporating the drug into its portfolio will yield up to €100 million in additional earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization for the fiscal year ending December 2027, assuming full-year consolidation. With loss-of-exclusivity patent protections expected to remain intact in Europe until 2029 and in the United States until 2030, the asset offers mid-term revenue predictability. The move builds upon Grünenthal's ongoing growth model, which has seen the company invest approximately €2.6 billion in corporate development and asset purchases since 2017 to fund its broader research pipeline.
The transaction reflects ongoing shifts in oncology commercialization, where major developers divest non-core assets to refine their therapeutic focus while mid-sized drugmakers expand into targeted specialty niches. Healthcare providers and distribution networks across Europe, North America, and Asia-Pacific will see a transition in commercial oversight, though patient access to the therapy is anticipated to remain continuous throughout the integration process. For investors, the agreement underscores the commercial value of mature oncological therapies that offer steady cash flows despite impending patent expirations later this decade.
Grünenthal is a privately held pharmaceutical company headquartered in Aachen, Germany, specializing in pain management treatments and related therapies. Operating across 28 countries with sales reaching approximately 100 markets, the organization generated €1.8 billion in revenues in 2025 and employs roughly 4,100 professionals worldwide.
