H2Pro and Doral Hydrogen have partnered to develop a pioneering green hydrogen facility in Extremadura, Spain. Utilizing decoupled water electrolysis and dedicated solar power, the project will be the first to inject off-grid hydrogen into Spain’s national gas grid and the future H2Med European backbone.

H2Pro and Doral Hydrogen have finalized a development agreement to establish a solar-powered hydrogen production facility in the Extremadura region of Spain. According to official disclosures, the initiative will utilize a 5 MW Decoupled Water Electrolysis (DWE) system powered by a dedicated 10 MWp solar array. The project is designed to operate entirely off-grid, ensuring the output meets the most stringent European criteria for Renewable Fuels of Non-Biological Origin (RFNBO).

Initial production will be blended into the existing natural gas infrastructure operated by Enagás, with plans to eventually connect to the H2Med international hydrogen pipeline. H2Pro is an Israeli technology firm specializing in high-efficiency electrolysis, while Doral Hydrogen is a global renewable energy developer focused on large-scale green fuel infrastructure.

This development marks a significant shift toward decentralized hydrogen production. By connecting electrolysis units directly to solar generation via DC-to-DC architecture, the partners aim to bypass grid constraints and reduce conversion losses. The facility is scheduled for expansion to 50 MW of electrolysis capacity supported by 80 MWp of solar power.

For energy stakeholders, this project serves as a technical blueprint for the commercialization of green hydrogen in the Iberian Peninsula. It highlights the viability of off-grid configurations in meeting decarbonization mandates and provides a critical early-stage supply for the European hydrogen backbone, positioning Spain as a primary exporter of renewable gases to the broader EU market.
