Hanwha Aerospace has signed a €546 million contract with the Finnish Ministry of Defence for additional K9 Self-Propelled Howitzers. The order brings Finland's K9 fleet to over 200 units, making it the third NATO member to reach that threshold, with deliveries scheduled from 2028 onward.

Hanwha Aerospace has signed a follow-on contract with the Finnish Ministry of Defence for additional K9 Self-Propelled Howitzers valued at approximately €546 million, according to an official announcement. Finland first procured the K9 in March 2017 with an initial order of 48 units and has since placed multiple follow-on orders. With this latest contract, Finland becomes the third NATO member to operate more than 200 K9 units, joining Türkiye and Poland.

Hanwha Aerospace is a South Korean defence manufacturer and the global market leader in self-propelled howitzers. The K9 is a 155 mm/52-calibre self-propelled howitzer with a range exceeding 40 kilometres. The platform is operated by ten countries across four continents, including six NATO member states.

The 112 K9 units and associated spare parts are scheduled for delivery from 2028 onward. Finland has operated the K9 as its primary artillery platform for several years, enabling seamless integration of new units into existing force structures without requiring new infrastructure or extended transition periods. This development matters for the European defence sector, where NATO members are strengthening artillery capabilities in response to regional security dynamics. Finland's repeated procurement reflects deepening defence cooperation between Hanwha Aerospace and Northern European nations, extending beyond equipment supply to long-term support and maintenance cooperation.

For the defence industry, the contract reinforces the K9's position as the most widely operated self-propelled howitzer platform globally. Stakeholders including logistics providers, training systems operators, and maintenance networks stand to benefit from fleet expansion. The K9's mechanical design has proven well-suited to extreme Northern European conditions based on years of operational experience.
