Hanwha Ocean expands US defense presence through strategic design, workforce, and supply chain pacts

South Korea's Hanwha Ocean has executed three strategic agreements with US partners to collaborate on naval vessel design, workforce training, and supply chain integration, strengthening its position within the American defense shipbuilding ecosystem.

South Korean shipbuilder Hanwha Ocean has concluded a Professional Services Agreement alongside two Memoranda of Understanding with US organizations to enhance joint capabilities in naval ship design, workforce development, and industrial supply chains. The entity, a major shipbuilding and offshore engineering company headquartered in South Korea, specializes in naval defense vessels, commercial ships, and offshore platform construction. Under the primary engineering agreement, Hanwha Ocean will partner with US defense contractor Leidos to engineer the Global Fast Sealift vessel, establishing a quality assurance and technological co-development framework throughout the vessel's design phase.

To support manufacturing capabilities, the shipbuilder signed a workforce development agreement with Hanwha Philly Shipyard and Delaware County Community College focused on instructor training and specialized shipbuilding instruction. In addition, Hanwha Ocean executed a supply chain agreement with Hanwha Philly Shipyard, the Greater Philadelphia Chamber of Commerce, and the Greater Philadelphia Growth Partnership to identify regional suppliers, reinforce domestic maritime supply chains, and scale up local shipyard production capacity, according to official disclosures.

These agreements reflect a broader effort by foreign defense shipbuilders to integrate directly into the US naval industrial base. By securing design partnerships with established defense contractors and building local talent pipelines, international maritime firms can mitigate manufacturing bottlenecks and comply with stringent domestic sourcing requirements in the defense domain.

The strategic partnerships carry major implications for defense suppliers, maritime labor markets, and naval procurement programs across North America and East Asia.
