Hitachi Energy and Adani Energy Solutions have operationalized a high-voltage direct current (HVDC) city center infeed in Mumbai. The 1,000 megawatt project utilizes Voltage Source Converter technology to enhance the city's power imports by 50 percent while minimizing urban land use through compact engineering.

Adani Energy Solutions Ltd. (AESL), India’s largest private power transmission firm, and global technology provider Hitachi Energy have successfully commissioned a major high-voltage direct current (HVDC) link in Mumbai. The Kudus-Aarey connection introduces 1,000 megawatts (MW) of additional capacity, effectively increasing power supply from external sources by 50 percent. Hitachi Energy, a leader in sustainable energy solutions, deployed its Voltage Source Converter (VSC) technology to ensure precise power flow control and voltage stability within Mumbai’s high-density urban grid.

This development is critical for Mumbai’s energy resilience, as it modernizes infrastructure that had not seen a comparable capacity upgrade in 25 years. By utilizing a hybrid of overhead lines and underground cables, the project successfully navigated extreme spatial constraints, freeing up approximately 2 square kilometres of land. The link facilitates the transmission of renewable energy from various nodes across the national grid, supporting the rising consumption needs of a population exceeding 20 million. Beyond immediate energy security, the project serves as a strategic blueprint for global megacities facing land permitting hurdles and surging electrical demand.

The shift to in-city HVDC applications minimizes acoustic and electrical noise while managing grid congestion more effectively than traditional alternating current systems. For investors and urban planners, this milestone demonstrates the viability of high-capacity, clean energy integration in congested metropolitan environments, potentially triggering similar infrastructure investments across other rapidly expanding Indian urban centers.
