KENYA —Dangote Petroleum Refinery and Petrochemicals FZE has selected Honeywell Technologies for a technology and engineering scope supporting its planned 700,000-barrel-per-day refinery in Kenya. Honeywell’s work is expected to be valued at approximately $300 million and will cover process technologies, licensing, engineering services, proprietary catalysts, equipment and digital solutions.
The refinery is planned as a single-train facility and, if completed as specified, would rank as the world’s largest of its type. Its processing configuration is intended to handle crude grades ranging from light to heavy, giving the operator the ability to source feedstock from multiple regions rather than relying on a single supply channel.
Production is planned to include gasoline, diesel, jet fuel and polypropylene. The combination of fuels and petrochemicals gives the facility exposure to both transportation fuel demand and downstream industrial markets, while its crude flexibility is intended to provide greater choice in feedstock procurement.
A key element of the development approach is the reuse of engineering designs that Honeywell Technologies previously developed for Dangote’s refinery in Lekki, Nigeria. Applying established designs to the Kenya development is expected to reduce the project schedule by nearly two years compared with a typical newly constructed facility.
The development has implications for Kenya and the wider African energy market, where additional domestic refining capacity can alter regional flows of crude, refined fuels and petrochemical products. Refinery construction also creates potential demand across engineering, equipment supply, process technology, catalysts, digital systems and associated industrial services.
For fuel distributors, industrial consumers and other downstream market participants, a large domestic refining facility could change future sourcing patterns as production comes online. The ability to process crude from different regions may also affect procurement strategies and the range of feedstocks available to the refinery.
Dangote Petroleum Refinery and Petrochemicals is developing and operating refining and petrochemical assets, including the Lekki refinery in Nigeria. Honeywell Technologies provides refining and petrochemical process technologies, engineering services, catalysts, equipment and digital solutions used across industrial processing facilities.
