ARGENTINA —The Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) has approved a $200 million investment guarantee to support strategic electricity transmission infrastructure in Argentina. The 25-year guarantee is intended to help mobilize private financing for the AMBA I and Puerto Madryn–Choele, Choele–Bahía Blanca projects, which are designed to expand transmission capacity and reinforce the country’s interconnected electricity system, known as SADI.
The guarantee addresses a key financing challenge for large-scale power infrastructure: attracting private capital to projects that require substantial long-term investment. By helping reduce investor exposure to project-related risks, the IDB-backed mechanism is intended to facilitate funding for transmission assets that can strengthen the movement of electricity across the national grid. The operation is expected to directly benefit approximately 16 million users, including households and businesses, through improved electricity supply reliability.
Transmission capacity is an important factor in Argentina’s ability to deliver electricity to major demand centres and strategic grid connections. Expanding the network can help address constraints between generation sources and consumers, although the announcement does not quantify additional capacity, identify construction schedules or specify the expected completion dates for the two projects. The impact on supply reliability will depend on implementation and the effective integration of the new infrastructure into the wider system.
The operation also aligns with South Connection, an initiative intended to strengthen Argentina’s transmission network and improve capacity at strategic points for regional electricity interconnection. This gives the financing a broader infrastructure dimension beyond domestic supply: stronger transmission links can support the development of a more connected regional power system. The announcement, however, does not specify the volume of electricity expected to be exchanged across borders or name additional countries participating in these projects.
The guarantee is the first individual operation under a Conditional Credit Line for Investment Projects (CCLIP) whose objective has been revised to support Argentina’s economic development through investments in reliable and efficient electricity supply. The structure provides a financing route for strategic infrastructure without treating the guarantee itself as a direct construction contract or confirming the final allocation of private investment.
The IDB is a multilateral development bank that finances development programmes across Latin America and the Caribbean, including infrastructure and private-sector investment. For Argentina’s energy sector, the approval may create opportunities for transmission developers, engineering and construction contractors, equipment suppliers and institutional investors involved in long-duration infrastructure assets. It also illustrates the use of development-bank guarantees to support capital mobilisation in essential utilities. The announcement confirms approval of the guarantee, but does not establish that all project financing has been secured or that construction has begun.
