INDIA —Ground construction is underway on a major ₹250 billion coal gasification plant in Odisha, marking a shift from planning to physical execution for India's coal-to-chemicals sector. The project, managed by Bharat Coal Gasification and Chemicals Ltd, has secured single-window approval from state authorities and awarded key construction packages worth approximately ₹150 billion. The facility will utilize domestically engineered pressurized fluidized bed gasification technology to convert coal into syngas, process it into ammonia, and ultimately generate around 0.66 million tonnes of technical grade ammonium nitrate annually.
Bharat Coal Gasification and Chemicals Ltd is a joint venture formed by Coal India Ltd, the state-owned coal mining enterprise, and Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd, a major engineering and manufacturing public sector undertaking. The partnership combines Coal India's feedstock supply capabilities with Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd's technological and manufacturing expertise to build large-scale gasification infrastructure.
This development aligns directly with national efforts to establish 100 million tonnes of coal gasification capacity by 2030 under the National Coal Gasification Mission. By manufacturing key chemical inputs from abundant domestic coal reserves, the initiative seeks to reduce reliance on imported natural gas, ammonia, and chemical intermediates. The resulting technical grade ammonium nitrate serves as a vital component for domestic industrial explosives and fertilizer manufacturing.
The project signals substantial opportunities for heavy engineering firms, chemical manufacturers, and industrial infrastructure contractors as domestic technology gains commercial scale. Converting coal into industrial feedstock rather than strictly power generation creates a parallel growth avenue for mining and engineering sectors. Success in Odisha is expected to offer a functional reference model for future coal-to-chemical projects across energy and chemical supply chains.
