The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs has sanctioned a Rs 12.64 billion multi-tracking project to construct a third and fourth rail line on the 46-kilometer Ballari-Guntakal section. Designed to relieve heavy industrial bottlenecking, the project will expand regional freight capacity by 16.22 million tonnes per annum by fiscal 2029.

The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs has approved a Rs 12.64 billion railway multi-tracking project to construct a third and fourth track along the 46-kilometer Ballari-Guntakal section spanning Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh. According to official disclosures, the capacity expansion project is integrated into the national PM Gati Shakti Master Plan and is scheduled for completion by fiscal 2029. Spanning three districts and expanding access for approximately 700,000 residents across 99 villages, the development aims to eliminate severe traffic bottlenecks on a major interstate economic route. Indian Railways, managed by the Ministry of Railways, is India's state-owned national transport enterprise, operating one of the world's largest rail networks across passenger and bulk freight sectors.

The Ballari-Guntakal corridor serves as a critical logistics artery connecting industrial, mining, and agricultural centers across southern India. The existing track capacity faces high operational congestion caused by dense freight movements transporting iron ore, steel, coal, limestone, dolomite, fertilizers, and food grains. Adding two extra lines will expand freight transit capacity by an estimated 16.22 million tonnes per annum while enhancing passenger train punctuality and service reliability. Additionally, shifting bulk freight traffic from road networks to electrified rail is projected to reduce fuel consumption by 13.2 million liters and lower carbon dioxide emissions by 66.7 million kilograms over its operational lifespan.

From an industry and policy perspective, the investment reinforces the government's strategic focus on modernizing rail freight infrastructure to lower overall national logistics costs. Strengthening rail corridors in mineral-rich industrial belts supports heavy manufacturing efficiency while advancing broader sustainable transport objectives. The initiative also aligns with ongoing regional infrastructure planning, including the active preparation of a detailed project report for the adjoining Hospet-Hubballi rail line.

For industrial freight shippers, mining firms, and steel producers operating in Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh, expanded rail capacity provides essential operational benefits by reducing transit delays and lowering logistics overhead. Engineering, procurement, and construction companies specializing in civil railway works and track electrification are poised for strategic commercial opportunities during the project execution phase. Furthermore, enhanced transport connectivity is expected to stimulate regional trade and lower operating costs for commercial enterprises across the corridor.
