INDIA —India has combined a major infrastructure investment programme in Gujarat with an expanded agricultural support disbursement, as Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced development projects exceeding ₹140 billion during his visit to Banaskantha. The infrastructure package includes Ahmedabad Metro Phase 2A, covering the airport extension, and Phase 2B, extending connectivity towards GIFT City. The initiatives form part of the government's broader efforts to strengthen urban transportation infrastructure and support regional economic development.
A parallel component of the announcement focused on agricultural income support. The Prime Minister released the 24th instalment of the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi (PM-KISAN), transferring approximately ₹190 billion to the bank accounts of nearly 100 million farmers across India. More than five million beneficiaries are located in Gujarat, highlighting the programme's significance for the state's agricultural economy.
The Government of India administers PM-KISAN as a central-sector income support programme designed to provide eligible farming households with direct financial assistance. The latest disbursement reinforces the government's reliance on direct benefit transfers as an instrument of agricultural policy, particularly for small and marginal farmers who remain exposed to fluctuating input costs, weather conditions and agricultural market uncertainty.
The Prime Minister also highlighted the wider scale of agricultural financial assistance, stating that cumulative transfers under PM-KISAN have approached ₹4.5 trillion. He further cited approximately ₹24 trillion in minimum support price payments to wheat and paddy farmers over the preceding 12 years. These figures underline the government's continued emphasis on combining direct income transfers with procurement-based price support to strengthen agricultural household finances.
The infrastructure announcements carry implications for Gujarat's urban development, transportation and commercial property sectors. Expanded metro connectivity between Ahmedabad Airport and GIFT City could improve passenger mobility, strengthen access to business districts and support economic activity across the Ahmedabad-Gandhinagar corridor. Construction contractors, engineering companies, equipment suppliers and associated infrastructure service providers could also benefit from the implementation of the projects.
Meanwhile, geopolitical uncertainty and tensions in the Gulf region remain important considerations for India's agricultural input markets. The Prime Minister addressed concerns surrounding fertiliser and gas availability, stating that the government had taken measures to prevent higher international fertiliser prices from being transferred to consumers. This issue is particularly relevant to farmers, fertiliser manufacturers, importers and agricultural supply-chain businesses because energy and imported raw material costs influence domestic production and distribution economics.
For businesses and investors, the announcements reflect two complementary government priorities: infrastructure-led economic expansion and continued support for rural consumption and agricultural stability. The metro extensions could create opportunities across the infrastructure supply chain, while sustained farmer transfers may help support rural purchasing power and demand for agricultural inputs, consumer goods and related services. The ultimate economic impact will depend on project execution, infrastructure utilisation and the continued effectiveness of agricultural support mechanisms.
