India expands military healthcare infrastructure with new specialized centers and hospital capacity

The Ministry of Defence has initiated a major infrastructure expansion at Delhi’s premier military medical facilities. The project includes specialized oncology, ophthalmology, and joint replacement centers at Army Hospital (R&R) and a significant bed-capacity increase at Base Hospital to modernize tertiary care for armed forces personnel.

On April 6, 2026, the Ministry of Defence launched a comprehensive infrastructure overhaul at the Army Hospital (Research & Referral) and the Base Hospital in Delhi Cantt. The project involves the construction of three dedicated centers for Oncology, Ophthalmology, and Joint Replacement at the R&R facility, aimed at advancing specialized medical treatment. Simultaneously, the Base Hospital is undergoing a significant expansion, which will result in a 998-bed facility supported by an additional 100-bed crisis expansion wing to manage emergency surges. The Armed Forces Medical Services (AFMS) is the integrated medical wing of the Indian Armed Forces, responsible for providing comprehensive healthcare to serving personnel, veterans, and their families.

This development is critical as it transitions military medicine from routine curative services toward high-end tertiary care and deep research. By establishing specialized wings for cancer and complex surgeries, the government aims to reduce dependency on private healthcare providers and external high-end diagnostic services. From a strategic perspective, the expansion underscores a shift toward "health security" as a core component of national defense. The initiative impacts the domestic pharmaceutical and medical technology sectors, with a renewed emphasis on self-reliance in drug innovation and clinical trials.
