India introduces National Traceability Framework to boost fisheries exports and strengthen global compliance

The Government of India has launched the National Framework on Traceability in Fisheries and Aquaculture 2025 to modernize the sector, enhance export competitiveness, and meet global regulatory requirements.

The Government of India has introduced the National Framework on Traceability in Fisheries and Aquaculture 2025, a policy blueprint designed to establish an integrated, technology-driven monitoring system across the seafood value chain. The framework was unveiled by the Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry, and Dairying on World Fisheries Day under the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Kisan Samridhi Sah-Yojana (PM-MKSSY), according to official disclosures.

The initiative comes at a critical juncture for India’s seafood exporters. The United States, previously the largest destination for Indian seafood exports valued at USD 7.38 billion and representing roughly 35% of outbound shipments, has imposed reciprocal tariffs of 59.73% on the sector. The tariff action has intensified pressure on exporters to demonstrate higher standards of traceability, compliance, and sustainability.

The proposed system will be implemented in phases and will incorporate blockchain, IoT-enabled monitoring, QR-based tracking, GPS integration, and cloud infrastructure. Authorities aim to unify currently fragmented compliance practices into a single national architecture capable of meeting evolving international regulatory requirements.

By improving transparency from harvest to export, the framework is expected to enhance market credibility, reduce trade frictions, and support small-scale fishers and aquaculture farmers in accessing premium global markets. For exporters, processors, and logistics providers, the move signals a structural shift toward digitized compliance systems that could reshape operational standards across India’s fisheries ecosystem.
