India scales AYUSH R&D ecosystem through AYURGYAN scheme to strengthen evidence-based Ayurveda

The Government of India is expanding research, training, and innovation in Ayurveda under the AYURGYAN scheme, supporting multiple R&D projects and institutional capacity building to improve scientific validation, global acceptance, and commercialization prospects of traditional medicine systems.

The Ministry of AYUSH has intensified efforts to build a structured research ecosystem for traditional medicine through the AYURGYAN scheme, a centrally funded program operational since 2021–22. According to official disclosures, the initiative integrates capacity building, research funding, and interdisciplinary health studies, including a dedicated Ayurveda Biology Integrated Health Research component introduced in 2023–24. Over the past three years, 16 Ayurveda-focused R&D projects have received financial backing under the scheme.

This development is significant as India seeks to position Ayurveda within evidence-based healthcare frameworks, addressing longstanding concerns around standardization and scientific validation. Strengthening research output is expected to improve credibility in global markets, particularly in pharmaceuticals, wellness, and preventive healthcare. The Central Council for Research in Ayurvedic Sciences (CCRAS), an autonomous body under the Ministry of AYUSH responsible for scientific research in Ayurveda, has completed 189 projects in the past three years, with over 200 studies currently ongoing. Its work spans drug standardization, clinical research, and medicinal plant studies, supported by a nationwide network of research centres and collaborations with academic and healthcare institutions.

For industry stakeholders, these initiatives indicate growing institutional support for Ayurveda-linked sectors, including herbal pharmaceuticals, nutraceuticals, and wellness services. Investments in research infrastructure at institutions such as the National Institute of Ayurveda and the All India Institute of Ayurveda are expected to facilitate product development and regulatory alignment. However, the absence of new research centres in certain regions highlights uneven geographic distribution, which may influence regional investment patterns and access to research capabilities.
