India has finalized two defence contracts totaling Rs.8.58 billion for the Tunguska air defence system and P8I aircraft maintenance. The deals reinforce military readiness while advancing indigenous servicing capabilities, with the Boeing contract requiring 100 percent domestic content.

The Indian Ministry of Defence has formalized agreements worth Rs.8.58 billion to procure a short-range air defence system and secure depot-level maintenance for the navy’s maritime patrol aircraft. According to official disclosures, the contracts were executed in New Delhi in the presence of senior ministry officials.

A portion of Rs.4.45 billion has been allocated for the acquisition of the Tunguska air defence missile system from Russia’s state arms exporter JSC Rosoboronexport. The system is designed to counter aerial threats including drones, cruise missiles, and aircraft, addressing gaps in mobile air defence capabilities. Concurrently, a Rs.4.13 billion contract was awarded to Boeing India Defense Pvt Ltd for maintenance support on the P8I fleet, with the work mandated to use entirely indigenous inputs.

The transactions underscore New Delhi’s parallel focus on sustaining legacy defence partnerships, Moscow remains a key supplier for specialised platforms while operationalising self-reliance in high-value maintenance.

For Boeing, the agreement reinforces its role in sustaining India’s P8I fleet, a cornerstone of maritime surveillance and anti-submarine warfare. The indigenous maintenance mandate signals policy intent to build domestic servicing ecosystems, reducing long-term foreign dependency.

JSC Rosoboronexport is Russia’s state intermediary for the export and import of defence-related products.

Boeing India Defense Pvt Ltd is a wholly owned subsidiary of the US aerospace major, focused on defence manufacturing and support services in India.
