India to launch bidding for 220 MWE BSMR-200 pilot within six months

India plans to invite bids within three to six months for a 220 MWe Bharat Small Modular Reactor pilot project, with foreign companies eligible only if partnered locally, at an approved cost of approximately ₹ 300 million per MW.

India will issue bids within three to six months for the construction of a 220 MWe Bharat Small Modular Reactor (BSMR-200), according to official disclosures. The pilot project has an approved cost of roughly ₹ 300 million per megawatt, totaling approximately ₹ 59.60 billion, funded under the Nuclear Energy Mission.

Construction is estimated at 60 to 72 months following administrative and financial approvals. Foreign firms may participate but must form joint ventures with local partners. Domestic EPC-capable companies have already been identified. This development matters because the BSMR-200 pilot will establish a standardized design for subsequent SMR deployments, reducing regulatory and licensing uncertainties.

The project follows the December 2025 enactment of the SHANTI Act, which opened India’s nuclear sector to private investment. A final approval from the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs is pending, with inter-ministerial consultations ongoing. Industries impacted include nuclear engineering, heavy fabrication, and EPC contracting. Regional stakeholders include domestic power equipment manufacturers and international SMR technology providers seeking entry through local partnerships.

For investors, the pilot represents a test case for private participation in India’s nuclear market, with a stated national target of 100 GW nuclear capacity by 2047 and at least five indigenous SMRs operational by 2033.
