Indian Government extends PMGSY-III through 2028 with 839.77 billion INR revised budget

The Union Cabinet has approved the continuation of the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana-III until March 2028. With a total outlay of 839.77 billion INR, the initiative focuses on upgrading rural road networks to connect habitations with essential services, including agricultural markets, schools, and healthcare facilities.

The Indian Cabinet has authorized the extension of the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana-III (PMGSY-III) from its previous 2025 deadline to March 2028, as stated in official disclosures. The scheme’s total financial allocation has been revised upward to 839.77 billion INR. The Ministry of Rural Development, which oversees PMGSY, is tasked with the consolidation of major rural links and through routes to ensure all-weather connectivity. This extension also includes specific provisions for pending infrastructure, such as 161 long-span bridges, and permits the tendering of previously sanctioned but unawarded works.

This development is critical for the integration of the rural economy into the national supply chain. By improving access to Gramin Agricultural Markets (GrAMs), the project directly addresses logistical bottlenecks that currently inflate transportation costs for farmers. The inclusion of healthcare and educational hubs as primary connection points ensures that rural infrastructure investments translate into improved human capital and service delivery metrics. For the construction and engineering sectors, the move ensures a steady pipeline of public works contracts over the next three years.
