INDIA —Indian Railways has sanctioned the doubling of the 10.86-kilometer Chouk-Karjat rail line under Central Railway in Maharashtra, allocating an estimated budget of ₹4.97 billion. Approved as part of an umbrella infrastructure scheme focused on network expansion through track quadrupling, flyovers, and bypasses, the project converts the current single-line bottleneck along the Panvel-Chouk-Karjat corridor into a dual-track line. Upon operational completion, the upgraded line will accommodate five additional daily passenger services in each direction while supporting an estimated 18.35 million tonnes per annum in supplementary freight volume.
Indian Railways, operated by the Ministry of Railways under the Government of India, is the state-owned enterprise responsible for managing the national rail transport network. Central Railway is one of the primary zonal divisions within Indian Railways, administering key passenger and freight routes across Maharashtra and adjacent regions.
The expansion targets a strategic traffic bottleneck connecting suburban Mumbai and outer industrial hubs, where single-track constraints frequently cause transit delays and limit operational throughput. Upgrading the Chouk-Karjat section directly reduces dwell times for freight movements while enhancing commuter connectivity across the Panvel-Karjat regional corridor. By alleviating track congestion, the project optimizes rolling stock utilization and supports growing logistics demands driven by regional port and industrial activities.
