Indian Railways has cleared infrastructure projects worth approximately INR 8.72 billion spanning maintenance depots and corridor upgrades across three zones. The investments target higher passenger throughput, improved freight efficiency and reduced congestion in key rail corridors linked to ports and industrial regions.

Indian Railways, the state-owned national transporter operating one of the world’s largest rail networks, has sanctioned a series of infrastructure projects valued at about INR 8.72 billion across Northern, Southern and Eastern zones, according to official disclosures. The approvals cover expanded coach maintenance capacity in Rajasthan, line doubling in Kerala and a freight-focused bypass in West Bengal.

In Rajasthan, new and upgraded maintenance facilities at Shri Ganganagar and Lalgarh will support modern rolling stock, including LHB coaches and Vande Bharat trainsets. Together, the two projects represent investments of roughly INR 3.14 billion and will add additional washing lines, stabling tracks, pit lines and mechanised equipment to handle higher daily rake volumes.

Separately, the 21.1-km Turavur–Mararikulam section in Kerala will be doubled at a cost of approximately INR 4.51 billion. The corridor forms part of a high-density coastal route serving passenger flows and port-linked freight, and the upgrade is expected to enable additional daily train services and increase annual cargo throughput by nearly 2.9 million tonnes.

In West Bengal, a 4.75-km Kalipahari bypass line near Asansol, budgeted at about INR 1.07 billion, will remove the need for engine reversals between zones, reducing detention times for both freight and passenger trains.

Collectively, the projects signal a strategic shift toward maintenance modernisation and corridor decongestion. For logistics providers, port operators and manufacturers, improved turnaround times and higher line capacity could lower transit costs and enhance supply chain reliability across northern and eastern India.
