INDIA —Indian Railways has officially launched its Vande Bharat Sleeper Express service operating between Varanasi and New Delhi. Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and Union Minister for Railways Ashwini Vaishnaw presided over the flagging-off ceremony in Varanasi. The high-speed overnight service operates six days a week, establishing a modern rail link between India's national capital region and eastern Uttar Pradesh with scheduled intermediate stops at Ghaziabad, Aligarh, Kanpur Central, and Prayagraj.
Indian Railways is a statutory body under the ownership of the Ministry of Railways, Government of India, responsible for operating the nation's rail transport infrastructure. The state government of Uttar Pradesh coordinates regional urban development, tourism promotion, and transit integration across state commercial centers.
The newly deployed trainset features advanced engineering innovations, including an austenitic stainless steel car body compliant with international crashworthiness standards, an under-slung propulsion system, and an integrated Train Collision Avoidance System. Designed for long-distance overnight travel, the train cuts travel times by 55 minutes from Varanasi to New Delhi and by 35 minutes on the return leg compared to traditional express services, while incorporating automated plug doors, regenerative braking, and enhanced safety features.
This deployment highlights ongoing capital investment by national rail authorities to modernize inter-city passenger transit. For regional businesses, hospitality operators, and corporate travelers, faster and more reliable overnight connectivity reduces travel friction between major economic and cultural hubs, while providing rolling stock manufacturers and technology suppliers with clear indicators of broad-scale fleet modernization trends.
