Indian Railways sanctions ₹4.4 billion third-line track expansion to ease East India freight congestion

Indian Railways has sanctioned a ₹4.4 billion infrastructure project to construct a 14.52 km third railway line between Nimpura West Outer Cabin and Midnapur. The expansion targets a critical freight corridor currently operating well above maximum line capacity.

A critical rail bottleneck in eastern India is set for capacity relief following official approval for a ₹4.4 billion infrastructure expansion project under South Eastern Railway. The initiative entails constructing a 14.52 km third railway line connecting Nimpura West Outer Cabin and Midnapur in West Bengal. The affected route forms part of the High Utilisation Network (HUN-2), where existing track infrastructure has faced severe operational constraints due to heavy traffic volume.

Indian Railways is the statutory body under the ownership of the Ministry of Railways, Government of India, tasked with operating the nation's national rail network. As one of the largest railway networks globally, it handles major industrial freight transit alongside extensive passenger transportation across all Indian states.

The expansion targets a corridor that currently operates at an extreme line capacity utilisation rate of 115.71%. The existing route handles nearly 23.8 MTPA of cargo traffic, serving as a primary artery for key industrial commodities including iron ore, coal, steel, cement, fertilizers, petroleum products, and essential agricultural goods. Doubling works on the single-line Nimpura West Outer Cabin-Gokulpur stretch are already underway, and the addition of a third track will provide essential operational flexibility and congestion relief.

From an industry perspective, this infrastructure upgrade directly addresses logistics inefficiencies affecting energy, mining, and manufacturing sectors in Eastern India. By generating an estimated additional cargo capacity of 3.52 MTPA, the project will enhance supply chain reliability for heavy industries reliant on raw material transit. Reduced transit delays and improved network throughput will also yield cost savings for freight operators while expanding overall capacity for regional passenger services.
