A new AI-driven video analytics system will be deployed at Spain’s three largest airports to monitor aircraft turnaround activities in real time. The technology, implemented by Indra and Synaptic Aviation, aims to enhance operational efficiency and sustainability across facilities handling over 150 million passengers annually.

Indra, a global technology and consulting firm, has partnered with Synaptic Aviation to introduce an artificial intelligence-based monitoring system at Madrid-Barajas, Barcelona-El Prat, and Palma de Mallorca airports. According to official disclosures, the solution utilizes real-time video streams to track critical ground events, including refueling, catering, and GPU connections. This automation replaces manual tracking for approximately 477 parking positions managed by Aena, the Spanish airport authority. Indra is a leading Spanish multinational specializing in defense, transport, and air traffic management technologies.

This development is significant as it provides high-accuracy, low-latency data on turnaround times, which are often the primary cause of network-wide flight delays. By digitizing the apron, the platform allows for precise synchronization of ground crews and equipment. The deployment impacts airlines, ground handling agencies, and airport operators by maximizing existing infrastructure capacity without requiring major physical construction. For decision-makers, the strategic value lies in improved predictability and reduced fuel emissions, as optimized workflows minimize the time aircraft spend with engines idling.

As air traffic volumes continue to rise, such data-driven tools are becoming essential for maintaining safety standards and meeting stringent environmental targets within the European aviation sector. This rollout reflects a broader industry shift toward using computer vision to bridge the visibility gap between flight landing and take-off.
