AUSTRALIA —Japanese energy group INPEX Corporation is boosting its controlling stake in Western Australia's major offshore natural gas development by exercising contractual pre-emption rights. Through its Australian subsidiaries, the group entered into definitive agreements to buy out the 0.735 percent participating interest held by JERA Co., Inc.'s local unit. Upon regulatory clearance from Australian authorities, INPEX will see its overall equity share in the Ichthys LNG Project rise from 67.82 percent to 68.555 percent.
The buyout stems from a December 2025 decision by JERA to sell its project subsidiary to MidOcean Energy. Under the existing Joint Operating Agreements and Shareholders Agreement, project partners were notified of the proposed asset transfer, enabling INPEX to intercept the deal and secure the equity for itself. The acquisition encompasses upstream gas-condensate assets in Blocks WA-50-L and WA-51-L as well as equity in Ichthys LNG Pty Ltd, which manages downstream gas liquefaction, pipeline infrastructure, and LNG marketing operations.
Consolidating ownership in primary production hubs reflects a broader push by major Asia-Pacific energy producers to maintain structural control over long-term natural gas supplies. Increasing control over liquefaction capacity and export pipelines strengthens supply stability across primary demand markets in Japan and the broader Asia-Pacific region. By expanding its asset base in a operating megaproject, INPEX directly advances the corporate objectives detailed in its INPEX Vision 2035 framework while minimizing integration risk.
The ongoing operation of large-scale liquefied natural gas facilities remains pivotal to Asia's energy transition roadmap, where natural gas serves as a critical baseload fuel alongside renewable developments. Continued investment in major Australian production basins highlights sustained international confidence in the regional regulatory environment and energy export corridors. INPEX Corporation is Japan's premier exploration and production enterprise, developing global oil and gas resources while expanding initiatives in carbon capture and storage, hydrogen, and renewable power capabilities.
