An infrastructure joint venture between IRCON International and Badri Rai & Company has secured a 24-month contract valued at INR 7.63 billion from the Tripura State Electricity Corporation for metropolitan smart grid deployment.

According to official regulatory filings, a joint venture consisting of IRCON International and Badri Rai & Company has been awarded an infrastructure contract worth INR 7.63 billion by the Tripura State Electricity Corporation Limited. Under the 74:26 partnership, lead member Badri Rai & Company will execute works valued at INR 5.65 billion, while IRCON’s allocated portion stands at INR 1.98 billion. IRCON International is an Indian state-backed engineering and construction corporation specializing in transport, power, and complex infrastructure projects.

The contract mandates the comprehensive design, installation, testing, and commissioning of an underground power cable network alongside modernized smart grid applications across the Agartala Municipal region. The technical scope incorporates advanced software frameworks including distribution management and automated outage systems, extensive geographic mapping, fiber optic communication links, and twin smart grid control hubs. Separately, the Ministry of Railways has designated Saleem Ahmad, current head of Rail Vikas Nigam Limited, to take additional charge as Chairman and Managing Director of IRCON for one year starting July 1, 2026.

This extensive modernization directly impacts regional electrical utility operators, industrial telecom fiber suppliers, and engineering software developers in Northeast India. For infrastructure investors, the rollout underscores a widening domestic public sector policy push to underground fragile overhead electricity networks, mitigating weather-induced outages in urban hubs. Structurally, the simultaneous leadership transition ensures executive continuity for the state-backed contractor as it deploys these specialized data-driven grid capabilities within the stipulated 24-month construction timeline.
