THAILAND —Multilateral development institutions are scaling up coordinated investments to address global food security and economic resilience across rural communities. According to official disclosures announced in Bangkok, the Islamic Development Bank (IsDB) and the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) have signed a renewed Cooperation and Co-financing Agreement targeting the mobilization of up to $750 million in joint capital commitments.
The strategic framework builds upon a collaborative relationship that originated in 1980, during which both institutions have successfully co-financed 29 projects valued at approximately $1.45 billion. Under the newly established agreement, a comprehensive joint action plan will direct resources toward critical areas including agribusiness value chains, market access, rural finance, financial inclusion, climate adaptation, sustainable natural resource management, and water access. Furthermore, the initiative paves the way for expanded private sector operations supporting rural small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).
To maximize developmental impact, the partnership integrates the broader capabilities of the wider IsDB Group, engaging specialized affiliates such as the Islamic Corporation for the Development of the Private Sector (ICD), the International Islamic Trade Finance Corporation (ITFC), and the Islamic Corporation for the Insurance of Investment and Export Credit (ICIEC). This multi-faceted approach combines development finance, trade facilities, private investment, and risk mitigation instruments to accelerate rural transformation across common member nations.
