INDIA —The Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir is executing a series of large-scale transport and logistics infrastructure projects across rail, highway, and aviation sectors. Key developments include the operationalization of the 437.8 billion Indian rupee Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link spanning 272 kilometers, along with the rollout of 110 rural road projects valued at over 15 billion Indian rupees under federal connectivity schemes.
The Ministry of Railways and the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways are central Indian government departments responsible for national transport networks, rail operations, and strategic highway development. Indian Railways manages national rail services, while the Airports Authority of India oversees civil aviation infrastructure and terminal operations.
Strategic road and tunnel infrastructure projects include the 27 billion Indian rupee Sonamarg Tunnel, the ongoing 68.08 billion Indian rupee Zojila Tunnel, and the Delhi-Amritsar-Katra Expressway. Additionally, aviation and freight infrastructure are expanding via a 16.77 billion Indian rupee civil enclave expansion at Srinagar International Airport alongside new multi-modal cargo terminals under the PM Gati Shakti framework in Samba, Kathua, Anantnag, and Jammu.
This multi-modal infrastructure push strengthens year-round supply chain integration between northern frontier territories and mainland Indian industrial hubs. For agricultural exporters, logistics operators, defense networks, and tourism enterprises, establishing uninterrupted surface and air transport channels mitigates seasonal disruptions, lowers freight transit overheads, and expands market reach for regional commodities.
