Japan Airlines has expanded its partnership with SES to integrate advanced multi-orbit inflight connectivity on 41 wide-body aircraft. Utilizing electronically steered antennas, the carrier aims to provide high-speed, low-latency internet on international routes, reinforcing its commitment to digital service innovation through 2028.

Japan Airlines (JAL) has reached an agreement with SES to deploy high-speed, multi-orbit inflight connectivity across its international long-haul fleet. The deal covers 41 aircraft, including 20 Airbus A350-900s and 21 Boeing 787-9s. The rollout involves both linefit installations on new deliveries starting in 2028 and retrofitting existing wide-body frames. This initiative expands on a previous commitment to equip JAL's narrow-body Boeing 737-8 aircraft with similar technology beginning in 2027.

SES is a Luxembourg-based satellite telecommunications provider that operates a diverse fleet of geostationary and medium Earth orbit satellites. Japan Airlines, the country's flag carrier, operates an extensive global network and is recognized for its early adoption of passenger digital services. By utilizing electronically steered antennas (ESA), the system seamlessly switches between geostationary (GEO) and Low Earth Orbit (LEO) constellations. This dual-orbit approach significantly reduces latency and ensures consistent global coverage, addressing a primary pain point for long-haul business travelers.
