ITOCHU Corporation has invested in Japanese biotech firm United Immunity, contributing to a JPY 5 billion combined private funding and government grant package to accelerate clinical development of advanced targeted immunotherapies.

JAPAN —Japanese trading house ITOCHU Corporation has finalized a strategic capital investment in United Immunity, a Tokyo-headquartered biotechnology startup specializing in novel cancer immunotherapies. The private placement forms part of a broader JPY 5 billion financing package for United Immunity, which includes JPY 2.2 billion raised from private investors alongside a grant of up to JPY 2.8 billion from the Japan Agency for Medical Research and Development (AMED) under its startup support framework.

United Immunity focuses on the research, development, and commercialization of targeted immunotherapies for difficult-to-treat diseases. Founded in late 2017, the firm utilizes a proprietary nanoparticle delivery platform designed to direct therapeutic agents specifically to immune cells, enabling the development of in vivo cell therapies that modify the body's internal immune response to target solid tumors.

This financial injection addresses critical barriers in oncology, where traditional cell therapies often encounter resistance, efficacy limitations, and high production expenses. By targeted delivery to myeloid cells such as macrophages, the platform aims to establish scalable, cost-effective treatment modalities. The capital will primarily fund global clinical trials and expedite the commercialization of these cell-modifying approaches.

The deal highlights a growing convergence between diversified industrial conglomerates and specialized biopharmaceutical ventures. Major trading companies are increasingly deploying capital into advanced life sciences to diversify earnings and support public health infrastructure, aligning corporate growth strategies with national economic priorities in critical technology sectors.

For the broader pharmaceutical landscape, success in in vivo cell targeting could streamline drug delivery manufacturing and lower production overheads for complex biologics. ITOCHU plans to leverage its supply chain assets and corporate network to assist United Immunity in sourcing raw materials, navigating commercial chemical channels, and scaling operations internationally.
