ITOCHU Corporation has secured an equity stake in Aegis Terminal (Pipavav) Ltd., partnering with Aegis Vopak Terminals to operate India's first independent bulk ammonia handling and storage infrastructure in Gujarat.

INDIA; JAPAN A major Japanese trading conglomerate has deepened its infrastructure footprint in South Asia by purchasing an equity stake in Aegis Terminal (Pipavav) Ltd. from Aegis Vopak Terminals Ltd. The transaction grants the investor direct participation in an independent liquid bulk terminal facility at Port Pipavav, Gujarat, which officially achieved commercial readiness on August 10, 2026. The newly commissioned asset features an ammonia storage capacity of approximately 36,000 metric tons alongside dedicated marine cargo handling infrastructure, pipelines, and overland logistics connections.

This capital deployment addresses critical supply chain bottlenecks in Western India's industrial belt. Ammonia serves as a vital feedstock for regional fertilizer production and chemical manufacturing, while increasingly gaining traction as a zero-carbon fuel alternative and hydrogen vector. Establishing dedicated, high-capacity import and storage infrastructure ensures supply reliability for domestic manufacturing hubs while positioning the region as a prospective node for international green energy trade.

The joint venture model combines global commodity trading capabilities with specialized domestic port operations, impacting fertilizer manufacturers, chemical producers, and maritime shipping lines transitioning toward cleaner fuels. The project strengthens Gujarat's standing as a strategic maritime logistics hub, offering improved import economics for industrial consumers across Northern and Western India.

For global energy investors and industrial stakeholders, the transaction highlights a growing trend of international strategic partnerships targeting India's downstream energy transition infrastructure. The asset provides a foundation for scaling import volumes as domestic demand for low-carbon hydrogen carriers expands over the coming decade.

ITOCHU Corporation is a Tokyo-headquartered global trading company engaged in domestic trading, import/export, and international business development across diverse sectors including energy, chemicals, and infrastructure. Aegis Vopak Terminals Ltd. operates as an Indian tank terminal operator specializing in the storage and handling of liquid chemicals, LPG, and petroleum products.
