Jupiter Wagons' energy subsidiary secured a 41 MW/102.5 MWh BESS project in Uttarakhand alongside a formal contract award for a 50 MW/200 MWh facility in West Bengal, accelerating its expansion into utility-scale storage infrastructure.

INDIA —Jupiter Wagons Limited, through its clean energy unit JEM Energy, expanded its utility-scale energy storage presence across northern and eastern India. The company, in partnership with Madhav Infra Projects, emerged as the winning bidder for a 41 MW/102.5 MWh standalone Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) project in Uttarakhand under a competitive tariff-based bidding process, representing an estimated supply and deployment value of ₹1 billion. Concurrently, the firm received its formal contract award for a 50 MW/200 MWh standalone BESS installation at the Jeerat substation in West Bengal.

These utility-scale storage deployments reflect a critical phase in strengthening India's power transmission infrastructure. By placing battery storage units directly at provincial electrical substations, utility providers can smooth out supply fluctuations, enhance grid stability, and optimize the integration of variable renewable energy sources into the central network. Such infrastructure aligns with national initiatives designed to expand energy storage capacity and fortify intra-state transmission corridors.

For the power and equipment manufacturing sectors, the developments highlight an accelerating transition toward integrated grid-support services. The deployment of utility-scale batteries allows state distribution entities to manage peak demand more effectively while reducing grid congestion. As energy transmission requirements become more complex, industrial manufacturing firms are increasingly diversifying into high-growth clean energy verticals alongside traditional transport and engineering operations.

From a commercial perspective, securing substation-level projects supports JWL’s strategic goal to build a ₹10 billion BESS order book by FY27. Expanding into new geographic regions provides the business unit with a scalable foundation aimed at achieving operational profitability over the medium term, while reinforcing its positioning in the evolving commercial, industrial, and utility energy markets.

Jupiter Wagons Limited is an Indian mobility and engineering solutions provider operating across freight wagons, passenger rail equipment, commercial vehicle components, and energy storage systems.
