INDIA; JAPAN —Energy conglomerate JERA and AM Green Ammonia have finalized a binding framework to govern the long-term delivery of green ammonia originating from Indian production facilities. Under the arrangement, approximately 70,000 tonnes of renewable ammonia will be shipped annually across a five-year window, with provisions for future volume extensions. Production will occur at a facility in Kakinada, Andhra Pradesh, utilizing an advanced renewable energy architecture backed by pumped-hydro storage and alkaline electrolysis to meet strict European low-carbon thresholds.
The imported commodity is slated to arrive at specialized receiving, storage, and distribution terminals currently under development near JERA's Hekinan Thermal Power Station in Aichi Prefecture. From there, the fuel will primarily supply a joint venture between Kawasaki Kisen Kaisha and Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha, which intends to deploy ammonia bunkering vessels to service upcoming fleets of ammonia-powered car carriers.
This arrangement signifies a pivotal transition for corporate decarbonization strategies by extending lower-carbon ammonia applications beyond traditional power generation into maritime logistics. Establishing an international supply chain for green maritime fuels creates the necessary commercial and technical precedents for heavy transport sectors seeking viable alternative energy sources to meet net-zero targets.
The development directly impacts maritime operators, energy providers, and industrial stakeholders navigating stringent environmental mandates across Asian and global markets. For project developers in South Asia, the agreement validates regional capability to export certified green molecules at scale, while positioning Japanese utilities and shipping firms as early adopters of cross-border clean fuel infrastructure.
JERA operates as a major power generation enterprise producing a significant share of Japan's electricity alongside extensive liquefied natural gas procurement operations globally. AM Green is an industrial decarbonization platform focused on developing large-scale renewable energy, green hydrogen, and green ammonia production facilities to serve international markets.
