JGC Corporation and Hyundai E&C have been selected as the EPC contractor for TotalEnergies' Papua LNG Project, a 4 million tonne-per-year low-carbon facility in Port Moresby. The plant will use electric drive technology to reduce emissions, with final award subject to project FID scheduled in 2026.
JGC Corporation, together with Hyundai Engineering & Construction, has been selected as the EPC contractor for the Papua liquefied natural gas (LNG) Project planned by TotalEnergies and its venture partners in Papua New Guinea, according to an official announcement.
The joint venture will construct an LNG production plant in Port Moresby with annual capacity of approximately 4 million tonnes across three trains, using natural gas from the Elk-Antelope gas fields. JGC Holdings is a Japanese engineering firm with extensive LNG project experience, having participated in construction of facilities representing more than 30% of global LNG production.
The company previously executed EPC work for the PNG LNG Project, which achieved first production in 2014 and currently produces over 8 million tonnes annually. Hyundai E&C is a Korean construction company specialising in large-scale energy infrastructure. The plant will adopt electric drive technology using electric motors rather than gas turbines to drive refrigerant compressors, significantly reducing CO₂ emissions. The selection follows evaluation of the joint venture's track record, engineering capabilities, safety management, pricing, and schedule.
Final EPC contract award and notice to proceed are expected after the project's final investment decision, scheduled for 2026. This development matters for the global LNG sector, where low-carbon design is increasingly prioritised amid energy transition pressures. The project will expand Papua New Guinea's total LNG production capacity to over 10 million tonnes annually, reinforcing the country's export position.
For the engineering and construction industry, the award adds to JGC's active LNG portfolio alongside projects in the UAE, Mozambique, and Malaysia. Stakeholders including equipment suppliers, logistics providers, and local contractors stand to benefit from project execution.
