INDIA —Power Grid Corporation of India Limited (POWERGRID), a state-owned electric utility enterprise established in 1989, operates India's national power transmission network. The central public sector undertaking manages the bulk transmission of power across inter-state corridors, playing a vital role in national energy security and power distribution infrastructure.
Full commercial operations have formally commenced for the Tariff-Based Competitive Bidding (TBCB) transmission scheme established to evacuate power from the 2,500 MW Solar Energy Zone in Bidar, Karnataka. Official commercial operation clearance was finalized on October 5, 2026, marking the total completion and readiness of the high-capacity power corridor. The project was initially executed via POWERGRID Bidar Transmission Limited, which was subsequently merged into POWERGRID Khavda II-C Transmission Limited following regulatory approvals from the Ministry of Corporate Affairs earlier in the year.
This infrastructural milestone addresses critical transmission bottlenecks in southern India, enabling seamless integration of bulk renewable power into the regional grid. By establishing dependable high-voltage evacuation channels from large-scale solar hubs, the development directly accelerates decarbonization initiatives, stabilizes voltage profiles, and reduces transmission line losses across the state energy network.
The operationalization provides vital power evacuation assurance for solar project developers, clean energy utilities, and industrial power consumers in Karnataka and neighboring regions. Furthermore, the successful rollout underscores ongoing market transition toward competitive bidding frameworks in power transmission, offering predictable long-term utility revenues while reinforcing investor confidence in utility-scale renewable integration.
