Kenya secures €68.39 million African Development Bank injection to finalize Thwake Multipurpose dam

The African Development Bank Group has authorized €68.39 million in supplementary financing for Phase I of Kenya’s Thwake Multipurpose Water Development Program. The capital injection ensures structural finalization and long-term climate resilience for the flag-ship development, currently at 90 percent completion.

The execution of Kenya's primary water security asset has advanced following a major sovereign infrastructure funding allocation. According to official disclosures, the African Development Bank Group authorized a €64.20 million loan alongside a €4.2 million concessional window allocation, complemented by €15 million in counterpart funding from the Kenyan government to push the project past its 90 percent execution baseline. This capital tranche will fund immediate structural modifications, including raising the dam's height, reinforcing core foundations, and constructing two supplementary saddle dams to push the final completion target to September 2028. This macro-utility project directly impacts the East African civil engineering, large-scale agriculture, hydro-power generation, and municipal water treatment sectors. The finished asset will yield significant regional economic returns by distributing 150,000 cubic meters of treated water daily across the semi-arid counties of Kitui and Makueni. On a macro policy level, the project acts as a cornerstone for Kenya’s Vision 2030 blueprint by combining resource management with green energy goals, specifically creating a 20 MW hydropower capacity and supporting 40,000 hectares of new agricultural irrigation.

For international infrastructure contractors, heavy machinery suppliers, and agrarian consultants, the finalized complex mitigates downside environmental risks in the Athi River catchment. By stabilizing regional crop yields and providing predictable energy baseloads, the facility addresses water scarcity constraints while opening sustainable commercial investments in the regional food processing and logistics sectors.
