Larsen & Toubro (L&T) has entered into an agreement with the Tamil Nadu government to invest Rs 186 billion in three industrial projects spanning data centres, electronics manufacturing and maritime infrastructure. According to official disclosures, the projects are expected to generate approximately 8,200 jobs across the state. The largest component of the investment is a Rs 150 billion expansion of L&T’s data centre operations in Kancheepuram district, aimed at supporting rising demand for cloud computing, artificial intelligence workloads and digital storage capacity. The company will also invest Rs 25 billion in an electronics and electronic systems manufacturing facility in Coimbatore and Rs 11 billion to expand its shipbuilding complex at Kattupalli in Tiruvallur district.
The development is significant for Tamil Nadu’s industrial strategy as it strengthens three priority sectors: digital infrastructure, advanced manufacturing and maritime engineering. Increased data centre capacity could support India’s growing digital economy, while electronics production aligns with broader efforts to deepen domestic manufacturing capabilities.
